In Boromir’s defense, he was not dishonorable. He didn’t understand the Ring fully, the Ring which would have corrupted Gandalf, Galadriel, if they had touched it. Boromir did touch it, and he is just a regular Man, a man whose home is closest to the Enemy, in constant war, on the brink of destruction.Of course he would be tempted by a powerful weapon which would help turn the tide in a losing battle.
Also, the Ring would love to get into his hands. Being delivered so close to its master, in the hands of man, the most easily swayed. Sauron would just have to focus his power and reach out but enough to crush Gondor and reclaim his full power. The Ring has great influence, which shouldn’t be downplayed.
Boromir resisted the best he could, given his circumstances, and in the end he overcame the ring and repented, sacrificing himself for the Hobbits.
